Raw Banana "appe pan" Dahi Wadas (Holi Special!)

 Ever wondered why the foods that are consumed on the festival of Holi are consumed on that particular day? No?, well the reason is pretty simple and straight forward, hours of running after or away from friends, dancing (water soaked) and basically doing half a day of hard core cardio exercises takes up a lot of energy from our bodies.

No wonder then, that Thandai is especially had on this day (its a power packed drink full of vitamins, minerals and energy boosting sugars)

Another very popular Indian street snack had on the day of Holi are Dahi Wadas (Wada's are deep fried fritters made using black lentils, cumin seeds, ginger, green chili, cilantro leaves and salt while the Dahi is unsweetened curd or yogurt.) and for good reason, despite being fat rich snack, they offers you health benefits like calcium and protein. You can eat them when you are tired playing with your favorite Holi colors, along with boosting your energy levels, you also offer a treat to your taste buds.

Being a rich source of low fat yogurt, Dahi Wada's can be used to retain your fitness regimen, you can uhave them as a snack and never overeat, preferably between two large meals, instead of having it as part of your meal.

If you've read my space often you would know that any deep fried recipe is either baked or made in an appe pan at my home. These wada's too have been given a slight twist as they are made from raw bananas and not deep fried but "appe made" instead, you know what that means?, Yup, only half a teaspoon of oil per wada.

Intrigued?, Read on for the recipe below.

You will need:

---For making the wadas---
3 raw bananas
1 medium sized potato
3 - 4 tbsps gram flour (besan)
1 tsp ginger (grated)
Oil for frying
Salt to taste.

---For the garnish---
 ½ cup beaten thick yogurt or curd
 ½ tsp sugar
4 tbsps sweet and sour chutneys
½ tsp red chili powder
½ tsp cumin (jeera) powder
Chaat masala (optional)
A pinch of salt


Cut the edges of the banana and give a small prick to the potato.

Boil the bananas and potato in pressure cooker, cook for one whistle.

Let the pressure cooker cool down.

Take out the banana and potato from the water and peel them.

Let the  boiled banana and potato cool down for some time.

Once they are cool enough to handle grate them using a grater.

Add gram flour, ginger and salt.

Mix everything and knead the mixture with your hands like a dough.

Take small portion of banana potato dough and make balls out of it. Press them gently to give them a disc like shape.

You can deep fry these discs or cook them in appe pan as shown below wada's become golden brown and crispy.

To serve the dahi wada's, beat the yogurt to a smooth paste and season them with a little sugar and salt.

Whenever you are ready to serve, dip the wadas in yogurt and take them out onto a serving plate.

Top with some extra curd, sweet and sour chutney, red chili powder, cumin powder and chaat masala.
